Apologia (apolo-gee-ah) is the Greek word used in 1 Peter 3:15 which says, “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” The Greek word used for answer in the above verse is ‘apologia.’ Aside from meaning ‘answer’ it also means to give a reasonable defense. Therefore, Peter was telling his audience that they should always be prepared to give an apology to those challenge or ask questions. The practice of responding to those who ask questions is called, ‘apologetics.’
In the past Christian apologetics has been reserved for college professors and biblical scholars. However, because of society’s desire to have ‘empirical’ evidence for everything, Christian apologetics will see a major rebirth. It is inevitable that you as a Christian will engage in apologetical discussions.
